How it all began…
Beth Baker lets out a spirited laugh as she shares a memory from Deserving Décor’s early years. “We would load my Ford F-250 pickup truck to the brim. I could barely see out of the windows and I had just enough space to move my arms and turn the wheel. We would pick up furniture donations all over Bucks County to deliver to families living in transitional shelter apartments. My truck was a combination of a U-Haul and a storage facility.”
It’s been over nine years since Beth Baker, an interior decorator, founded Deserving Décor in early 2008. Its primary purpose for seven years was to provide homeless shelter makeovers for transitional shelter housing. With the help of generous community donations and dedicated volunteers, Beth and her team were able to provide furniture, soft goods, and household items to the clients of Bucks County Housing Group, the largest provider of homeless housing in Bucks County.
In 2015, Deserving Décor shifted its mission from homeless shelter makeovers to providing donated furniture, household goods, and new beds for women and children who have successfully moved on from homeless and domestic violence programs and are starting their lives over in newly rented apartments and homes. Deserving Décor also provides the same services for teens aging out of foster care and moving into rental properties.
Today, Deserving Décor’s clients are provided by our referral partners: A Woman’s Place, Bucks County Housing Group, Bucks County Opportunity Council, Family Services Association, Coalition to Shelter and Support the Homeless, and R J Leonard Foundation.
After working tirelessly with volunteers to pack up the Ford F-250, Beth realized she was limited as to how many families she could help with only one pickup truck. Beth decided she needed a partner so she joined forces with Good Stuff Thrift stores, who provide donated furniture and delivery services for families in need.
The collaboration between the two non-profits allows Deserving Décor to accept a greater amount of donations, picked up by Good Stuff Thrift. One essential item Deserving Décor struggles to provide is a bed. Beth and her team work diligently sourcing donated furniture, but beds need to be purchased. Deserving Decor started as a small project between a few decorating friends and has since evolved into an all-volunteer, 501(c)3 non-profit organization providing furniture and beds to hundreds of families every year. Beth’s team is still no more than a handful of women, but with the help of generous donors and through collaboration with Good Stuff Thrift, Deserving Décor continues to offer families a functional living space to call home, while they rebuild their lives.
